About Robert Tracy Ballock, MD

Dr. Ballock grew up in Western Pennsylvania and earned a honors degree in Biology from Harvard College, where he also played varsity football. Following graduation from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Ballock made a conscious decision to become an academic orthopaedic surgeon in order to satisfy his desire to understand mechanisms of musculoskeletal disease at the most fundamental level.  After internship and residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Ballock made an unusual career move for an orthopaedic surgeon by electing to spend two years in the intramural program at the National Institutes of Health, and a third year at Johns Hopkins, learning fundamental techniques of cellular and molecular biology.

Following these three years of basic science research training, Dr. Ballock completed a clinical fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, and subsequently accepted a faculty position at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland in 1994.

In 2002, Dr. Ballock left Rainbow for a ten-year term as Head of the Section of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and the Director of the Center for Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery in the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He currently holds the title of Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, where he directs a basic science laboratory focused on growth plate biology that has successfully attracted extramural funding for the past two decades.

Dr. Ballock has been honored with two of the highest international awards presented to orthopaedic surgeons, the Elizabeth Winston Lanier Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Arthur B. Huene Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.

With over twenty years experience in taking care of children with orthopaedic problems, Dr. Ballock's clinical interests are centered on treatment of pediatric fractures and sports injuries, birth defects, hip dysplasia, clubfoot, deformity correction and leg lengthening. He was fortunate to travel to Iowa City early in his career to learn the Ponseti method for clubfoot treatment from the late Dr. Ignacio Ponseti himself. Dr. Ballock's colleagues have consistently recognized the quality of his clinical work by naming him as one of Cleveland Magazine’s Best Doctors every year for the past fifteen years.

Dr. Bollack is very good about explaining everything. He showed us the X-ray and fully explained the condition and the course of treatment and how often the treatment was successful. I asked him a few questions and he gave very thoughtful answers. He really took his time with us and is one of your all time best Dr's.

I have been to Dr. Bollack and this office multiple times and they are very good at keeping things moving along. I love that he takes the time to see each child before he orders and X-ray. It makes me think he really cares about his patients and their well being.

loved Dr Ballock very nice man!

*Dr. Ballock was recommended as being good which is the only reason we see him (recommended by doctor). However, he doesn't give enough information. You have to ask him 100 questions to get any info from him & I still end up leaving confused. He makes you feel like he doesn't review records ahead of time to know/remember child's condition or why you're there for visit.

Physician, medical student, and staff were extremely friendly and timely. Physcian was very kind and respectful. Would gladly recommend him!

great experience! Dr. Ballock is great!

the doctor did many tasks which other doctors wouldleave to nurse/asst. it provided one continuous interaction with patient and doctor, which built relationship and maximized time. A methodology that works!

I am still in awe of this appointment. they called my son back at 10:45 for his 10:45 appt. in 22 min, he was checked in, X-rays examines, doctor introductions, doctor examination, doctor walked us thru X-rays, diagnosis, doctor (not nurse) retrieves boot, fits boot, all while talking to my son, teaches him to properly walk in boot, has him practice and then discusses follow up. the most thorough, yet efficient doctor's appointment EVER! I am still in awe.

dr. Ballock was very thoughtful and talked through issues concerning health moving forward

Reviewed on Jun 5, 2018

I appreciated that the Dr. spoke directly to my daughter about her injury and concerns.

Reviewed on Jun 4, 2018

The provider was able to determine and explain the injury, but then informed us that he no longer performs surgery and that we would have to schedule an additional appt. with a orthopedic surgeon who can perform surgery. Thus, I had to incur a repeat appt. for the same assessment. If the provider cannot perform the necessary resolution to the injury, then I felt like I should not have been given an appt. the provider and sent directly to the provider who can perform the surgery.

Reviewed on May 31, 2018

Although this was an excellently executed appointment by the physician, my child came away feeling as though the doctor had been unkind when asked about playing his sport during treatment of the injury. I think he was direct, but perhaps some sympathy would have helped.

Reviewed on May 10, 2018

Dr. Ballock is usually very quick to enter the room and let us know what is going on with our appt. This time there was definitely a long wait for him and his team. Very good Dr though. Always impressed and satisfied with his help.

Reviewed on May 8, 2018

Dr. Bollock has an excellent bedside manner, he is sincere and even though he really takes his time with us, you never have to wait long in the waiting room

Reviewed on Apr 17, 2018

excellent physician. getting an appointment should be streamlined. too much bumping around to get an appointment.

Reviewed on Apr 12, 2018

Did not explain or educate about condition. Shared concerns/questions myself & my child had & provider was dismissive of them. No forewarning to child before doing something that would hurt (child is 13).

Reviewed on Apr 12, 2018

The provider & MA were very "down to business". No personal touch.

Reviewed on Apr 12, 2018

Dr Bollack was wonderful with my son and made me feel at ease over the whole situation we were in. highly recommend!

Reviewed on Apr 4, 2018

Dr. Ballock was very helpful. He examined Zach and provided a detailed explanation of what he thought was going on. He is kind and made things easy to understand.
