About Robert Tracy Ballock, MD

Dr. Ballock grew up in Western Pennsylvania and earned a honors degree in Biology from Harvard College, where he also played varsity football. Following graduation from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Ballock made a conscious decision to become an academic orthopaedic surgeon in order to satisfy his desire to understand mechanisms of musculoskeletal disease at the most fundamental level.  After internship and residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Ballock made an unusual career move for an orthopaedic surgeon by electing to spend two years in the intramural program at the National Institutes of Health, and a third year at Johns Hopkins, learning fundamental techniques of cellular and molecular biology.

Following these three years of basic science research training, Dr. Ballock completed a clinical fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, and subsequently accepted a faculty position at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland in 1994.

In 2002, Dr. Ballock left Rainbow for a ten-year term as Head of the Section of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and the Director of the Center for Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery in the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He currently holds the title of Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, where he directs a basic science laboratory focused on growth plate biology that has successfully attracted extramural funding for the past two decades.

Dr. Ballock has been honored with two of the highest international awards presented to orthopaedic surgeons, the Elizabeth Winston Lanier Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Arthur B. Huene Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.

With over twenty years experience in taking care of children with orthopaedic problems, Dr. Ballock's clinical interests are centered on treatment of pediatric fractures and sports injuries, birth defects, hip dysplasia, clubfoot, deformity correction and leg lengthening. He was fortunate to travel to Iowa City early in his career to learn the Ponseti method for clubfoot treatment from the late Dr. Ignacio Ponseti himself. Dr. Ballock's colleagues have consistently recognized the quality of his clinical work by naming him as one of Cleveland Magazine’s Best Doctors every year for the past fifteen years.

Dr. Ballock was absolutely tremendous. courteous, personable, professionally dressed ( loved the Elmo tie), and advised us of the concern for getting sand in Natalia's cast while on vacation. Our experience was world class. Thank you, Dr. Ballock!

Dr. Ballock was wonderful! He was kind, professional, and spoke with my child in such a way she was completely comfortable with him casting her arm. Fantastic doctor!

the visit was great and the doc was very good. I would highly recommend him. I called the main orthopedic line and was able to get something the same day. my only concern is the person on the phone didn't know about the construction outside the building and it took me an extra 30 min to get there and I was late for the appt

very quick service and the Dr was very nice and never made us nervous about what was happening.

The doctor was very nice. Both my son and I liked him a lot.

The doctor was very compassionate and understanding. He did not worry my son or myself. Excellent manners and demeanor.

This was the most efficient doctor visit I have ever had. We were taken back to the examination room at exactly the appointment time. The doctor came in immediately. No delays at all! :)

Dr. Ballick was very good in listening to our concern and giving us direction options and then adding collaboration with another doctor to help solve my daughter's problem and work toward a solution that is yet to be determined. I'm very thankful as this has not been anything near our experience with Childrems orthopedic doctor nor OSU orthopedic doctor that has looked at my daughter's problem over the course of 8 years.

The doctor was quick and easy and very good with our 3 year old.

I liked the provider's approach, no nonsense and respectful of my time, but my son would have liked a little more gentle approach. also, I didn't get to see the x-rays, and I would have liked that very much.

I had my 4 week old son with me at the appointment. When he became very fussy near the end and the provider was explaining some aspects of the tx plan, the nurse/assistant took over helping to calm my fussy baby so I could focus on the provider's explanation. Very helpful going the extra mile.

Dr. Ballock was simply AMAZING! Awesome with my son, smile from the first second he walked in the door. My son is usually finicky with strangers *as he should be* but he senses good people and instantly warmed up to doc. I would recommend him a million times over to all of the people I know!

Excellent service! Dr. Ballock is very kind and genuinely cares about my daughter's health.

visit was rushed. my daughter was crying due to diagnosis, limitations concerning activity. the doctor never even acknowledged my daughter's tears and the started talking about how surgery wasn't even a viable option for her condition-

I honestly felt like our appointment was a bother to the provider- like we weren't worthy of his time for this particular injury

Dr Bullock has, from our first visit, given a genuine concern for my sons overall health and well being. He has given us honest and realistic goals throughout the healing process. although I hope to never see him again, he will be our first choice for orthopedic care in the future!

Dr. Bollack is very good about explaining everything. He showed us the X-ray and fully explained the condition and the course of treatment and how often the treatment was successful. I asked him a few questions and he gave very thoughtful answers. He really took his time with us and is one of your all time best Dr's.

I have been to Dr. Bollack and this office multiple times and they are very good at keeping things moving along. I love that he takes the time to see each child before he orders and X-ray. It makes me think he really cares about his patients and their well being.

loved Dr Ballock very nice man!

Reviewed on Oct 15, 2018

*Dr. Ballock was recommended as being good which is the only reason we see him (recommended by doctor). However, he doesn't give enough information. You have to ask him 100 questions to get any info from him & I still end up leaving confused. He makes you feel like he doesn't review records ahead of time to know/remember child's condition or why you're there for visit.
