About Ankur Kalra, MD

Ankur Kalra, MD, FACP, FACC, FSCAI, is an interventional cardiologist in the Section of Regional Cardiovascular Medicine and the Section of Invasive and Interventional Cardiology of the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He is the Medical Director of Clinical Research for Regional Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic.  Dr. Kalra sees patients at Akron General where he is Section Head, Cardiovascular Research.

Experience:  Specialists in the Section of Invasive and Interventional Cardiology at Akron General offer cutting-edge diagnostic tests and nonsurgical treatments for patients with all forms of cardiac and cardiovascular disease. The section’s physicians, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, nurses and technicians are highly experienced in taking care of these patients and work together as a team.

Dr. Kalra has performed more than 1,000 minimally invasive heart procedures, including percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and implantation of mechanical circulatory support devices, and more than 500 structural/transcatheter heart valve procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and balloon aortic valvuloplasty.

He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology and is a diplomate in adult comprehensive echocardiography.

Education: Dr. Kalra earned his degree in medicine and surgery from Indira Gandhi Medical College of Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, India. He served his residency at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India, and Cooper University Hospital, Camden, NJ. He received his subspecialty training as a fellow in cardiovascular disease at Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minn.; in interventional cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston; and in advanced interventional and structural cardiology at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center, Houston Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas, and Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, New York, NY. 

Dr. Kalra also is a graduate of Harvard University’s one-year Safety, Quality, Informatics and Leadership Program. He currently is pursuing a Masters of Science in Health Economics, Outcomes and Management in Cardiovascular Sciences from the London School of Economics and Political Science, London, UK.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Kalra has coauthored nearly 200 papers published in peer-reviewed medical journals, including original research, editorials and case reports. He is host of the cardiology podcast Parallax. He also serves on the editorial board and as a reviewer for numerous other journals and has presented on the latest innovations in interventional cardiology at regional and national medical meetings.

About Dr. Kalra: "The ability to deliver evidence-based, guideline-directed acute medical care through wire- and catheter-based skills and techniques to patients when they’re at their most vulnerable, in the midst of cardiac arrest or heart attack, for example, and at imminent risk of death, is a true privilege and personally an act of devotion for me. The ability and the true privilege to be able to intervene to save a life on a daily basis is the biggest blessing the Almighty and the universe have given us as interventional cardiologists, and that is my source of inner strength and vitality."

Leisure Activities: In his leisure time, Dr. Kalra enjoys big data analytics, high-intensity interval training, meditation, running, poetry, podcasting and writing. He is also author of the poetry book, Ibadah, that was released on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and launched in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Arts and Medicine Institute on Valentine's Day, 2020.
