Biography

About Jonathon White, MD

Jonathon M. White, MD, is an interventional cardiologist in the Section of Invasive and Interventional Cardiology in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute. He sees patients at Cleveland Clinic main campus.

Specialty Interests: Clinical cardiology, interventional cardiology (minimally invasive treatments for heart problems), interventions for adult structural heart defects, percutaneous coronary intervention, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), balloon aortic valvuloplasty (minimally invasive aortic valve repair), balloon and transcatheter mitral valvuloplasty (minimally invasive mitral valve repair), left atrial appendage closure, patent foramen ovale closure, atrial septal defect closure, paravalvular leak closure

Number of Patients Treated: Physicians in the Cleveland Clinic Section of Invasive and Interventional Cardiology treat thousands of patients annually for heart and valve disease and structural heart defects.  Dr. White has performed approximately 1,000 percutaneous coronary interventions and more than 400 heart valve and other structural heart interventions over the course of his career.

Success Rate: The overall mortality rate for patients who have interventional cardiology procedures at Cleveland Clinic typically is lower than expected based on the age of our patients, the severity of their illness and their general health condition. For example, in 2015, 303 patients had transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures at Cleveland Clinic. The in-hospital mortality rate was 2.3% compared with an expected rate of 7.2%.

Education and Training: A native of New Zealand, Dr. White earned his medical degree from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, and served his residency at hospitals in his native country. He completed four years of subspecialty training in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, echocardiography and cardiovascular intensive care at the Green Lane Clinical Center for Cardiology in Auckland, New Zealand, followed by a one-year adult interventional cardiology fellowship. He relocated to New York City in 2014 where he completed an advanced fellowship in valve and structural heart interventions at the Heart Valve Center of Columbia University Medical Center, New York. During that time, Dr. White also served as a Research Fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York.  Dr. White joined the Cleveland Clinic staff in 2016.

Publications and Speaking: Dr. White has published nearly two dozen scientific articles on transcatheter and percutaneous interventions for heart and valve disease and repair of structural heart defects. He has presented research study results at international medical meetings and since 2014 has lectured extensively on TAVR.

About Dr. White: “I love coronary and structural heart intervention for the opportunity to care for patients affected by heart disease, the leading cause of death in America. Although my chief interests lie in cutting-edge technological advances to treat heart disease, I am interested in the entire spectrum of cardiovascular treatment. I love working with patients to help them meet their health goals and understand the importance of healthy lifestyle and preventive measures in the lifelong care of cardiac patients.”

Leisure Activities: In his leisure time Dr. White enjoys running, reading and spending time with his wife and three young sons.

Industry Relationships

Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists may collaborate with the pharmaceutical or medical device industries to help develop medical breakthroughs or provide medical expertise or education. Cleveland Clinic strives to make scientific advances that will benefit patient care and support outside relationships that promise public benefit. In order for the discoveries of Cleveland Clinic physicians' and scientists' laboratories and investigations to benefit the public, these discoveries must be commercialized in partnership with industry. As experts in their fields, Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists are often sought after by industry to consult, provide expertise and education.

To assure professional and commercial integrity in such matters, Cleveland Clinic maintains a program that reviews these collaborations and, when appropriate, puts measures in place to minimize bias that may result from ties to industry. Cleveland Clinic publicly discloses the names of companies when (i) its physicians/scientists receive $5,000 or more per year (or, in rare cases, equity or stock options) for speaking and consulting, (ii) its physicians/scientists serve as a fiduciary, (iii) its physicians/scientists receive or have the right to receive royalties or (iv) its physicians/ scientists hold any equity interest for the physician's/scientist's role as inventor, discoverer, developer, founder or consultant.* In publicly disclosing this information, Cleveland Clinic tries to provide information as accurately as possible about its physicians' and scientists' connections with industry.
