Susan McInnes, MD

Susan McInnes, MD joined Cleveland Clinic as a staff physician in the Palliative Medicine Program at Taussig Cancer Center in 2014. She attended medical school at Medical College of Ohio (now University of Toledo), and her Internal Medicine Residency as well as Medical Oncology and Infectious Diseases Fellowships were at University of Chicago. Dr. McInnes has dedicated her career to improving quality of life for oncology patients. She has practiced medical oncology, malignant hematology and bone marrow transplantation. She discovered a passion for interdisciplinary palliative care early in her oncology career and has been practicing palliative medicine and supportive care for over 20 years. She was on the faculty of University of Toledo and University of Colorado with joint appointments in palliative medicine and medical oncology.

In 2015, Dr. McInnes initiated and continues to lead a novel embedded palliative medicine service on the solid tumor oncology inpatient service at Cleveland Clinic. This service has led to improved house staff education, improved pain control for cancer patients and increased advance directive completion rates for hospitalized oncology patients. In January 2019, she initiated an embedded palliative service on the bone marrow transplantation unit, providing optimal symptom management and support for advance care planning. This is a unique collaborative care model that is available at only a few of the top cancer centers in the United States.

Since January 2020, Dr. McInnes has served as the chief quality improvement officer and the institute patient experience officer for the Taussig Cancer Institute. Dr. McInnes’ research interests include quality improvement and care model development in palliative oncology care. She has presented results from these projects at national oncology and palliative medicine conferences.
