About Robert Kotloff, MD

Dr. Kotloff is Chairman of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. He has worked in the field of lung transplantation for the past 26 years and has extensive clinical experience in the evaluation of transplant candidates and in the care of transplant recipients. In addition to his involvement in lung transplantation, Dr. Kotloff has special expertise in the evaluation and management of patients with lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and other cystic lung diseases.  He also maintains an active interest in general pulmonary medicine and, in particular, in evaluating patients with complex pulmonary disorders.

Professional Highlights

  • In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Kotloff has made medical education and scholarship a focus of his career. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book chapters and has edited or co-edited six books. He previously directed the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Training Program at the University of Pennsylvania for 24 years. He has served as Chair of the Pulmonary Disease Test Writing Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Chair of the Transplant Network of the American College of Chest Physicians, and as President of the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors. Previous editorial board positions include Associate Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Section Editor for CHEST, and Associate Editor of the Annals of the American Thoracic Society (AnnalsATS).  He currently is the Senior Deputy Editor for AnnalsATS.  Dr. Kotloff is the 2011 recipient of the American College of Chest Physicians College Medalist Award recognizing meritorious service in furthering work in chest medicine. He is also the 2016 recipient of the American Thoracic Society Outstanding Educator Award which recognizes "lifetime contributions in education and mentoring in the fields of pulmonary, critical care or sleep medicine."

I am very Thankful for Dr Kotloff, to be able to be under his care. He is kind, courteous, very knowledgeable, explains his findings with me that's easy for me to understand. He has followed and supported my progress of no regression at all, shown from tests results. I am thrilled GOD intervened in the deadly disease of IPF. Dr Kotloff is very happy with my results and is continuing with testing every six months to keep track. Again, I could not be Happier with Dr Kotloff's Professionalism and Expertise. I LOVE Cleveland Clinic. I live 4 hours away, but I am glad to travel that far to get expert care. So Thank you Dr Kotloff, and his staff. Dr. Kotloff exemplifies what a physician should be. I traveled over 7 hours to see him. He is always readily available to me through email and his cell phone and gets back to me promptly. He is such a professional, a wealth of knowledge in his field and such a caring doctor. He truly cares about his patients.
