Biography

About Dermot Phelan, MD, PhD

Dermot Phelan, MD, PhD, FACC, is a staff cardiologist in the section of Cardiovascular Imaging in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, and Medical Director of the Sports Cardiology Center in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He is an Assistant Professor at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Phelan is a course Co-Director for the Cleveland Clinic echocardiography national meeting and serves on the Research Council of the American Society of Echocardiography. He is Co-Editor of the cardiology section of Disease Management, a free, online clinical resource authored by Cleveland Clinic physicians that has more than 800,000 page views per month. He is a contributing Expert Writer for the sports magazine, Stack.

Dr. Phelan is the team cardiologist for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He also serves on the Cardiac Screening Advisory Committee for the National Basketball Association. Dr. Phelan attends the National Football League Scouting Combine each year as the Cardiology Consultant for the team physicians. In this role, he reviews all of the cardiovascular testing for the players and makes decisions regarding safe participation at the Combine. Dr. Phelan’s passion about cardiac care of athletes extends beyond professional players to athletes of all skill level and age.

Number of Procedures Performed: Cleveland Clinic physicians perform more than 72,000 echocardiograms each year. Of these, Dr. Phelan performs nearly 4,000 echocardiography studies, including transesophageal echos, preprocedural imaging and intraoperative imaging to guide surgery.

Education and Training: Dr. Phelan earned his undergraduate degree and doctorate degrees from University College Dublin, Ireland. After completing his medical degree, he divided a two-year residency in medicine between Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia, and Saint Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. Following a six-month fellowship in cardiology at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin, he returned to University College Dublin as a PhD Clinical Scientist Fellow. Following this two-year experience he served a fellowship in cardiology, training in three hospitals in Dublin and Galway, Ireland. He completed his training with an advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Phelan joined the Cleveland Clinic staff in 2013.

Publications and Speaking:  Dr. Phelan has authored or coauthored two dozen articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and has written multiple chapters in a medical text books and study guides. He has delivered nearly three dozen research abstract presentations at national medical meetings and conferences.
