About Harneet Walia, MD

Harneet Walia, MD, FAASM is an Associate Professor in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University where she subspecializes in diagnoses and treatment of complex sleep disorders. She is a Staff at the Center for Sleep Disorders in the Neurological Institute, Cleveland Clinic. She is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has additional board certification in Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Walia received her MD degree from the Kasturba Medical College, India. She completed her residency at St. Elizabeth Health Center and fellowship training at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Walia's research focuses on the association of obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular disorders particularly resistant hypertension. She is also actively involved in research related to patient reported outcomes in relationship to treatment of sleep disordered breathing.  She is currently involved in research elucidating the relationship between sleep disordered breathing and resistant hypertension to devise new interventions for effective management of hypertension in this patient population. Her results have been presented nationally and have resulted in numerous abstracts, manuscripts and book chapters.

Dr. Walia has given numerous presentations on the topics related to sleep disorders regionally, nationally and internationally.

She is involved in media relations to increase awareness of sleep disorders and has appeared on numerous national news broadcasts. She also serves as a Medical Director for the Lorain sleep laboratory of Cleveland Clinic.  She mentors sleep medicine fellows and serves as reviewer on multiple journals including Sleep and Breathing, Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine and Journal of Clinical Sleep Research.

Dr. Walia also serves as the quality improvement officer for the sleep center and is champion for continuous improvement process for her center. She has led multiple quality and continuous improvement projects in the sleep center.

  • Dr. Walia has been recipient of research awards including sleep research travel award and was selected from the competitive pool of applicants to attend Young Investigator Forum in 2012 by American Academy of Sleep Medicine. She was selected to attend FLEX Professional Development Program for Women Faculty of the School of Medicine. She was also chosen for the Neurological Institute Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation scholar award for 2015-2016. She has been selected for Women's Professional Staff Association Senior Rep Program. Her mentees have received various research awards regionally and nationally for their research work. Her team received the caregiver celebration tier 4 award in efforts of improving sleep bed utilization.
