Biography

About William Schiavone, DO

William A. Schiavone, D.O., is a cardiologist in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute.  He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and echocardiography.

Dr. Schiavone's specialty interests include cardiac imaging, particularly cardiac MRI and intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), pericardial disease, valvular heart disease and predicting complications of mitral valve repair.

Dr. Schiavone previously was on staff at Cleveland Clinic from 1983-1988, leaving to join Cardiology Specialists in Akron where he practiced until 2004. While in private practice he taught at NEOUCOM and achieved the rank of Professor of Medicine.   From 1991 to 2004 he was also Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory at Summa Health, Akron.

Since 2004 Dr. Schiavone has been in practice at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA, where he was Director of Noninvasive Cardiology and Director of the Electrocardiography Laboratory.  He rejoined the Cleveland Clinic staff in 2012.

Dr. Schiavone received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated first in his class and was inducted into the National Osteopathic Honor Society.  He served both his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at Cleveland Clinic.

He continued his subspecialty training with a course in Doppler echocardiography at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and Regional Hospital, Trondheim, Norway.  In 2005 he updated his clinical skills with a fellowship in cardiac MRI at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, UK.

Dr. Schiavone has published more than 75 scientific papers and 2 textbooks.  He is a member of the Ohio State Medical Association, the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and was a member of the American Heart Association for 15 years, serving on the Akron chapter’s Board of Trustees for 7 years.  He is a Fellow the American College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology, American College of Chest Physicians, American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology, and American Society of Echocardiography.



On vacations, Dr. Schiavone loves to take walking tours of the Italian countryside with his wife.

Dr. Schiavone has taken time to return phone calls personally on several occasions. He obviously cares about his patients, and is very knowledgeable.

Dr Schiavone is one of the best and most compassionate doctors I have ever seen. He is my cardiologist. I would love him to be my doctor for everything.
