About Jonathan Scharfstein, MD

Jonathan S. Scharfstein, MD, FACC, is a staff physician in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute and practices at Hillcrest Hospital with office in the Hillcrest Medical Building. Dr. Scharfstein is Chief of the Division of Cardiology, Medical Director of the Coronary Care Unit and has been the Medical Director of the Chest Pain Center since 2007 at Hillcrest Hospital. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.

Prior to his appointment to the Cleveland Clinic staff, Dr. Scharfstein was in private practice with Cardiovascular Associates of Cleveland. He has been on the medical staff at Hillcrest since 2000. His previous positions include appointments at Brigham and Women’s and University Hospitals in Boston, MA, Director of Interventional Cardiology and the cardiology fellowship training program at The Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Cleveland, and Co-Director of the cardiology fellowship training program at University Hospitals of Cleveland.

Education and Training: Dr. Scharfstein earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He served an internship and residency in medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD. He completed fellowships in clinical cardiology and interventional cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, a research fellowship in medicine at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, and a second fellowship in interventional cardiology at University Hospital, Boston.

In addition to his research fellowship at Harvard, which included teaching responsibilities, Dr. Scharfstein’s academic appointments have included clinical instructor positions at Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine. He has been an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland since 1995.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Scharfstein has been an investigator on a number of significant clinical trials related to interventional strategies for heart attack, and has published more than a dozen original papers, reviews and abstracts in professional journals.

About Dr. Scharfstein: “I enjoy cardiology because of the diversity of diseases in the field, all with their unique acute and chronic challenges.  I also enjoy meeting patients for the first time in the midst of an acute illness, such as a heart attack, providing them emergency care, getting them through their initial crisis, and then providing follow-up care over long periods of time.”

This comment relates to all my Clinic doctors, not just this practice: When I schedule a 6 month follow up appointment while I'm there it works well. However if you need an appointment sooner it can be difficult to get one less than several months out. Difficult to reach some doctors offices directly without going through the appointment center
