About Daniel Cantillon, MD

Daniel J. Cantillon, MD, FACC, FHRS, is a staff physician and Associate Section Head of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology and pacing.

Dr. Cantillon also serves as the Medical Director for Cleveland Clinic’s Central Monitoring Unit, which provides continuous cardiac rhythm, hemodynamic and respiratory monitoring for patients at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus and regional hospitals. Dr. Cantillon served two terms on the Board of Trustees for the American College of Cardiology, Ohio Chapter, including Co-Chair of the Health Policy Committee. Dr. Cantillon holds an academic appointment in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. In February 2014, Dr. Cantillon was the first Cleveland Clinic physician to successfully implant a leadless cardiac pacemaker. He also performed the first successful Cleveland Clinic percutaneous retrieval of a chronically implanted leadless pacemaker in March, 2017. In December 2021, Dr. Cantillon performed the world’s first entirely leadless pacemaker – defibrillator system, and then later the first dual chamber leadless pacemaker in the United States in February 2022. 

Dr. Cantillon serves at the Research Director for the Section of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing. His notable research achievements include original research publications in the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association. In 2016, his research was selected as one of the top 4 ‘notable papers of the year’ by the Heart Rhythm Society. An innovator, Dr. Cantillon was named the 2017 Cleveland Clinic Innovator of the Year for Health Information Technology for his work on developing the eCMU, a novel hospital-based remote patient monitoring system, and later the prestigious Sones-Favaloro award for innovation in 2020.

Education and Training: Dr. Cantillon is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC. While at Georgetown, he was the recipient of the Thomas F. Keliher Award for Clinical Performance.

Dr. Cantillon served his residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York, NY, where he was Assistant Chief Resident and earned the David E. Rogers Memorial Award for Outstanding Research. Between 2006 and 2011, Dr. Cantillon completed fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and cardiac electrophysiology at Cleveland Clinic. During his cardiovascular medicine fellowship, Dr. Cantillon earned a Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute Competitive Research Grant.

Publications and Speaking: Dr. Cantillon has or co-authored more than 100 scientific papers, multiple chapters in medical textbooks and co-authored clinical practice guidelines. He is a regular scientific reviewer for Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm, and other journals. He has been an invited speaker at the Heart Rhythm Society, American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology and the International Academy of Cardiology and participated in several "Meet the Experts" or “Meet the Professor” panels, and has delivered invited Grand Rounds presentations at other health systems.

Let me 1st say that Dr. Cantillon and the CC team were excellent. I am very happy to report that the combination of CC game plan with my condition and the results achieved from my procedures, improve my personal healthcare (diet, exercise, etc.), I am probably in the best condition that I have been since my condition began. I owe a lot of this success to being inspired to improve and the results of Dr. Cantillon and the CC cardiology team.

Dr. Cantillon was absolutely fabulous. I have been struggling with my health for a full year, and he gave me a good idea of what was wrong, a thorough explanation of the treatment and risks, and showed great concern and care through the whole visit. I actually cried when I left the office I was so relieved.

Dr Cantilon was very personable, sympathetic to my condition and previous treatment, professional and did everything to make us feel important and comfortable about the care we would expect at the clinic. He took his time to answer every question and then made sure we understood. The course of treatment was agreed to after he presented several options. He did not pressure me towards any particular option but made sure he explained them all and let us know the decision was ours. I feel confident that what we have chosen will be good and If It shouldn't work out, Dr. Cantilon will be there for our next decision. I would very highly recommend him.

I could not have anticipated or experienced a more compassionate or concerned physician. Dr. Cantillon spent an extended amount of time with me and was sure to answer each and every one of my questions. Best doctor I've ever had by far. Dr. Cantillon goes above and beyond for his patients. He doesn't seem rushed, he explains everything in detail and will do so again and again until we understand. He has my best interest as his top concern. He is very personable, friendly, down to earth, but also extremely knowledgeable and I definitely trust him completely! We have been so happy with Dr. Cantillon that we are willing to continue to drive 4 hours to Cleveland and back for check-in appointments, even though there are other providers in my area that could check in with me at this point. We wouldn't want to go to anyone else!

Always a good experience. Been Dr. Cantillon's patient since approximately 2016. This was my first visit with him at the Twinsburg location. Perfect & closer to my home.
