Intraoperative Radiation Therapy
The Intrabeam Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) device delivers low energy, high dose radiation directly to the tumor bed in the operating room.
Following the surgical removal of the tumor, a spherical applicator is placed directly into the tumor bed. The Intrabeam delivers 50 kV x-rays to the target with a rapid dose fall off to surrounding normal structures. The Intrabeam device can be used to treat tumors throughout the body, such as colorectal or breast tumors. The typical treatment takes approximately thirty minutes.
