Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICUs) are under the direction of Eric Kaiser, MD. A staff of nine Anesthesiologists, Board Certified in both Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, and eight Acute Care Nurse Practitioners comprise the team that provides clinical management in the CVICUs, 24-hours a day, seven days a week. There are a total of 76 CVICU beds divided into six subunits, for a total capacity of 23,000 patient-days per year.
Clinical management is collaborative with the cardiothoracic surgeons and vascular surgeons. This collegial structure enables the CVICU Anesthesiologists to participate in all clinical decisions and to direct aspects of patient management such as ventilatory support, sedation, fluid management, nutrition and cardiac monitoring. The CVICU Staff also play a key role coordinating postoperative care between other clinical specialties.
Approximately 60 respiratory therapists work in the CVICUs, and are directly supervised by the CVICU Staff Anesthesiologists.
