An Innovative Partnership: Cleveland Clinic and IBM

It takes about 17 years for a scientific discovery in a research lab to become an approved test or therapy for patients. Cleveland Clinic and IBM are partnering to close the gap.

Our Projects

The Discovery Accelerator uses a variety of computing technologies to advance healthcare and life sciences research. Our projects are organized into four categories:

  • Education and outreach.
  • Quantum computing.
  • Accelerated discovery.
  • Digital health.

Advancing the Pace of Discovery

Cleveland Clinic and IBM have entered into a 10-year partnership to establish the Discovery Accelerator — a joint center that utilizes Cleveland Clinic’s research and clinical expertise and IBM’s global leadership in computing technologies.

The goal of the partnership is to advance the pace of discovery in healthcare and life sciences by using high-performance computing — including the hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence and quantum computing technologies.

This collaboration is creating a robust research and clinical framework that will allow big data medical research in responsible, privacy preserving ways. This could lead to discoveries for patient care and new approaches to public health threats.

IBM installed the first private sector, on-site quantum computer at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus. Quantum computing has the potential to put revolutionary problem-solving abilities into the hands of scientists and healthcare providers. Learn more about IBM’s work in accelerated discovery.

The Discovery Accelerator will enhance research in the new Global Center for Pathogen & Human Health Research in the fields of genomics, population health, clinical applications and drug discovery.
