What We Treat Services

Services

Akron General’s Neuroscience Institute offers highly specialized neurosurgical procedures and intensive care for stroke, complex spinal conditions and peripheral nerve disorders, as well as neurologic oncology, brain tumors and skull base surgery.

Minimally Invasive & Robotic Spine Surgery

Our specialists, recognized in neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery, provide patients with the latest, most innovative, most effective surgical treatments available for back problems. A minimally invasive and robotic spine surgery approach may be used for patients with lumbar and cervical disc herniation, spinal stenosis, age-related wear on spinal discs, bones in the spine that slip out of place and disc degeneration.

Minimally invasive and robotic spine surgery offer several advantages over open surgery, including:

  • Minimally disrupting the normal tissues (muscles, ligaments, etc.).
  • A few tiny scars instead of one large scar.
  • Shorter hospital stay.
  • Reduced postoperative pain.
  • Shorter recovery time.
  • Less blood loss during surgery.

Our team evaluates each patient and their condition to determine the best form of treatment, whether it be minimally invasive surgery and/or robotic spine surgery.

Brain Tumors & Neurosurgery

Brain tumors, lesions, aneurysms and other serious conditions affecting the brain are often located in hard-to-access areas, surrounded by delicate nerves and arteries. The Akron General Neuroscience Institute offers the skill of a multispecialty team, but also the advanced technology of Brain Lab - intraoperative MRI and CT - which makes treating some complex brain tumors and neurological conditions possible. Gamma Knife surgery can also be used to treat brain tumors and is offered at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving the brain that makes people more susceptible to having recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Akron General runs an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, a four-bed monitoring unit allowing epilepsy specialists to diagnose a seizure problem accurately and design the best possible treatment plan.
