We are reinstating pre-operative COVID-19 testing at Ohio locations

Due to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, we are resuming pre-operative and pre-procedural COVID-19 testing within three days prior to surgeries and procedures taking place at all Ohio hospitals and Ambulatory Surgery Centers. This change will take effect for surgeries and procedures starting on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, until further notice. SelfCheck swabbing and collecting will begin on Jan. 3, 2022, for patients scheduled for surgery / procedures on Jan. 6, 2022, to account for the necessary lead time to swab, collect, test and report 72 hours pre-operatively.

Please begin placing COVID-19 test orders for any new patients or patients not yet scheduled for surgery using the Ambulatory Pre-Operative COVID Test Order Panel.

For patients already scheduled for surgery from Jan. 6 through Jan. 14, 2022, a bulk COVID-19 test order will be placed. For patients with a date of surgery after Jan. 14, 2022, the surgeon's office will need to contact the patient and place the COVID-19 test order.

Use of the SelfCheck(TM) COVID-19 Swabbing Kit is strongly encouraged due to swabbing capacity challenges that may prevent patients from being tested within the three-day window. The Pre-Operative COVID-19 Test Order Panel will walk you through the criteria to determine if a patient qualifies for SelfCheck.

If a patient does not meet criteria for SelfCheck, your office should schedule a COVID-19 testing appointment for 2-3 days (72 hours) prior to the patient's date of surgery. Swabbing capacity is limited, so patients should be scheduled well in advance of their surgery to ensure availability of a testing appointment 2-3 days (72 hours) before surgery.

Resuming this safety measure helps us protect patients and caregivers from the spread of COVID-19, and maintain our safe environment of care. Thank you for your support.

Reminder about scheduled and community testing

Caregivers and patients with scheduled appointments at a Cleveland Clinic location for a COVID-19 test should report to their designated location (e.g., the P building on main campus or an Express Care location).

Individuals with appointments should not report to the Walker community testing site. The Walker Center Cleveland Community COVID-19 Testing Site is separate and is being run by the National Guard. It is for individuals in Northeast Ohio who do not have an appointment or doctor’s order. Read details here.
