Providers: Note alternative COVID-19 testing options for outpatients in Cleveland area

If your patients in an outpatient setting request COVID-19 testing that our organization currently does not provide, please note that there are alternative testing options that you may offer.

In particular, Cleveland Clinic does not currently provide COVID-19 testing for:

  1. Patients who do not have symptoms. If a patient is asymptomatic, Cleveland Clinic will not perform COVID-19 testing, Cleveland Clinic will not perform COVID-19 testing, unless the patient has had close contact to someone with COVID-19 or the patient is requesting testing for travel, return to school/college, or childcare purposes.  
  2. Patients returning to their workplace after COVID-19. (Note: This guidance is independent of protocols for Cleveland Clinic caregivers.) Cleveland Clinic is not performing return-to-work COVID testing for patients. A test is not required for patients to return to work if at least 24 hours have passed since their last fever without the use of fever-reducing medications, there is an improvement in symptoms, and at least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared. If testing is being requested based on local return-to-work guidance, we recommend that the patient contacts the health department. Please note that if the patient has been given an order of isolation by the health department, this order MUST be discontinued by the health department before the patient can return to work.
     

Alternative testing options for patients

**Patients who request testing that Cleveland Clinic would not provide can be referred to:

Retail Options:

CVS

  • Patients age >10 (Legal guardian has to consent ages 10-17).
  • Patients 10-15 years of age must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian. 
  • Will need to answer screening questions regarding high-risk conditions and symptoms.
  • Insurance and proof of identity required.
  • Rapid tests available but limited – rapid test results are delivered same day.
  • Average turnaround time for receiving results in 3-4 days.

Rite Aid

  • Patients age >13 (Legal guardian has to consent ages 10-17).
  • Will need to answer screening questions regarding high-risk conditions and symptoms.
  • Take 2-7 days for results.

Costco

  • At-home saliva test available for purchase online only.
  • Prices range from $130-$140 per test kit.
  • Administer the test at home and mail in for results.
  • Results available online 24-72 hours after mailing in the kit.

Passport Health

  • Only testing asymptomatic individuals that need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test to fly or return to work/school.
  • Schedule an appointment by calling 937.306.7541.

Hometown Urgent Care

  • Locations in Shaker Heights, Parma and Garfield Heights.
  • Testing symptomatic patients 7 days a week.
  • Call location before arriving for test.
  • Tests are free of charge to the patient.
  • Results available in 3-6 business days.

Everly Well

  • At-home test kit available for purchase online.
  • $109 per test kit.
  • Cost of test kit possibly reimbursable with certain insurance providers.
  • Test should be used by symptomatic patients 18+.
  • Results are sent digitally within 24-48 hours of the lab receiving your sample.

Free testing in Cleveland — Federally Qualified Health Centers

Testing for those with COVID-19 symptoms or those who have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 is available for free at the local, federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) below:

Care Alliance:

  • Central Clinic – 2916 Central Ave.
  • Drive-thru and walk-up testing, by appointment only.
  • Tests are free of charge to the patient.
  • Call the COVID-19 Nurse Line at 216.535.9100 and press 6.
  • Testing done Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Results are back in 24 to 48 hours.

Neighborhood Family Practice

  • W. 117th Street Community Health Center – 11709 Lorain Ave.
  • By appointment only.
  • Tests are available regardless of one’s ability to pay.
  • Call 216.281.0872 for information or to schedule an appointment.

  • Results are back in 2-3 days.

Neon Hough

  • 8300 Hough Ave. (West Parking Lot).
  • By appointment only.
  • Tests are free of charge to the patient.
  • Testing done Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Centers

  • Midtown Office - 4500 Euclid Avenue.
  • Drive-thru and walk-up testing, appointments encouraged with walk-in available each day.
  • Tests are free of charge to the patient.
  • Testing symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
  • Call 216.325-WELL (9355) to talk with an access specialist, be triaged by a nurse, and schedule your telehealth visit with a provider for screening for a test.
  • Testing Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Results available within 24-48 hours.

Testing options at Cleveland congregations

COVID-19 tests are being offered by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and MetroHealth System at congregations in Cleveland. Walk-up and drive-thru options are available. This list is continually updated so check back for updates.

Update about nonessential surgeries requiring an overnight stay in our hospitals in Ohio

The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 has increased dramatically in the State of Ohio. As a result, we are taking proactive steps to ensure the safe provision of care.

To serve the urgent needs of our patients and community, we have made the decision to postpone all nonessential surgeries requiring a hospital bed or an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed in our Ohio locations, with the exception of Lutheran Hospital, from Monday, Dec. 7, 2020 – Sunday Jan. 3, 2021.

During this time, all nonessential surgeries not requiring an overnight stay in Ohio will continue at our hospital facilities, and all Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) and Ambulatory Endoscopy Surgery Centers (AECs) will remain open, with the exception of the Marymount ASC.

We will continue with all essential surgeries, including cardiac, cancer, pediatrics and transplantation procedures. At Lutheran Hospital, outpatient and inpatient surgeries requiring a hospital or ICU bed will continue at this time.

We are proactively making more beds available to accommodate what we anticipate will be a continued increase in COVID-19 patients needing hospitalization. To put this in perspective, on Friday, Nov. 27, there were 624 inpatients with COVID-19 in our Ohio hospitals. As of Wednesday, Dec. 2, this number rose to 734 patients.

We understand that this decision will be challenging for our patients and communities. In making these decisions, patient and caregiver safety is our highest priority. We will reschedule these procedures as soon as possible.

At this time, no other changes to our surgical approaches in Ohio are planned. However, as this evolves, we will continue to assess our approach.

Lastly, our leaders throughout the enterprise continue to monitor the pandemic. These changes do not apply to our Florida regional hospitals. We will also continue to provide updates, and truly appreciate your ongoing dedication.
