We are extending postponement of nonessential surgeries and holds on unfilled OR space

We continue to be challenged by rising inpatient volumes and patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across Ohio hospitals.

To make additional beds available, we are extending the postponement of scheduled nonessential surgeries requiring a hospital bed at Ohio hospitals from Monday, Dec. 20, through Friday, Dec. 31, 2021.

In addition, we will be extending the adjustments to unfilled OR time at Ohio hospitals by holding scheduling of additional nonessential cases from Dec. 31, to the new date of Monday, Jan. 31, 2022.

We also ask surgeons who have an allocation at an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) and can safely perform an outpatient case within their current ASC block, to please prioritize an ASC over a hospital operating room.

Please also note:

  • This does not apply to essential, urgent or emergent surgeries, or those in need of surgery for cancer, transplant or pediatrics. Essential, urgent or emergent surgeries, or those in need of surgery for cancer, transplant or pediatrics requiring a hospital or ICU bed should not be deferred and will continue to be scheduled.
  • OR space created from cases postponed during this period of time will not be replaced with elective, non-essential (tier 3) cases requiring an admission or overnight stay. Emergency, urgent and essential cases will still be added to the schedule.
  • Outpatient surgeries which do not require a bed will continue to be scheduled at our Hospitals, ASCs and Ambulatory Endoscopy Centers (AECs). However, local hospital leadership may determine that additional limitations are appropriate, and will communicate those decisions with the hospital’s medical staff.
  • These changes do not apply to our Florida regional hospitals.

As always, patient and caregiver safety is our priority when making these difficult decisions. We will reschedule patients as soon as possible. If a patient cannot be rescheduled in Q1 2022, please place postponed patients on the surgical schedule on July 24, 2022. This is not a firm date, and will be used for tracking and reactivation purposes.

Thank you for your continued flexibility. We will continue to evaluate our capacity and keep you updated.
