Diseases of the Liver Biliary Tract and Pancreas
Major specialized interests in the Department of General Surgery are problems related to the liver, bile duct, and pancreas. Disorders managed range from benign and malignant tumors of the liver, through benign strictures and malignant cancers of the bile duct to pancreatitis and pancreatic tumors. The breadth of experience of the surgical team is supplemented by the multidisciplinary approach with Radiology, Gastroenterology, Oncology, and Radiation Therapy in developing treatment plans for the management of these complex problems. Many of the major disorders managed by this group are managed on protocol with well-defined state-of-the-art approaches to these difficult problems. Recently, the liver tumor treatment program expanded with the addition of radiofrequency (thermal) ablation which broadens the range of treatment for liver tumors. This is offered as a minimally invasive treatment with lower morbidity and a shorter hospital stay.
