How is an ingrown toenail diagnosed?

Tests or X-rays are usually not needed to diagnose an ingrown toenail. Instead, an ingrown toenail can be diagnosed by inspecting the skin along the edge of the nail. If the nail seems to be growing over the nail or underneath the skin, and if the skin is swollen and tender, it is likely an ingrown toenail.
