A fecal occult blood test (FOBT or FIT) is an annual test to check for blood in the stool. Large polyps and cancer may bleed and be detected in the stool. If blood is found in the stool, a colonoscopy is recommended to detect the cause of bleeding. Precancerous polyps can be removed during colonoscopy and prevent cancer. If colon cancer is detected and treated in its early stages it can often be cured.
