Prostate Cancer: Shared Medical Appointment
Lifestyle Changes After Prostate Cancer Treatment May Prevent Recurrence
The Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute's Prostate Cancer Shared Medical Appointment can help you improve your health and well-being through lifestyle changes. If you have a diagnosis of prostate cancer and are on active surveillance, or you have been treated for prostate cancer, you may be eligible to join us for our series of seven appointments, held every other week.
Learning in a shared setting
Prostate Shared Medical Appointments (SMA) are a series of uniquely designed medical appointments. They offer you extended time with urology and lifestyle medicine providers — in the company of others who share similar health concerns. More information is often exchanged during a SMA than an individual office visit because participants learn from each others’ comments and interaction with experts. SMA participants also benefit from group support.
What can I expect from Prostate Cancer SMAs?
These shared medical appointments are designed to help you adopt lifestyle practices that lead to optimal self-care. Each session will address one key lifestyle feature of a chronic disease. Discussions and practical experience will focus on lifestyle changes that positively impact health, as you learn:
- How to transition to healthy eating
- How to safely increase physical activity
- How to recognize and manage stress

What Can I Expect?
How will I be able maintain progress?
After each session, you will be given a limited set of key practices to implement into your daily life. Needless to say, regular practice leads to lasting lifestyle modifications that promote health.
Will I have to leave my primary care physician or my prostate cancer treatment team?
No, you will keep your primary care physician and healthcare team. During these appointments, lifestyle medicine physicians will work with your urologist and/or your primary care team to address the lifestyle-related aspects of your condition.
Is this program covered by insurance?
Shared medical appointments are covered by most insurance plans. Participants are responsible for an insurance co-pay at each appointment and for a one-time charge for program materials. (Cleveland Clinic employees have no copay for the physician component of this program.)
Where are Prostate Cancer Shared Medical Appointments offered?
Prostate Cancer SMAs are offered at the Center for Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine, in the serene surroundings of the Wellness Institute on Cleveland Clinic’s Lyndhurst campus, 1950 Richmond Rd, Lyndhurst, OH 44124.
