Adult Cystic Fibrosis

Cleveland Clinic Cystic Fibrosis Lung Transplant Experience

Cleveland Clinic is a national leader in transplantation for individuals living with CF. As a founding member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Lung Transplant Consortium, Cleveland Clinic’s main goal is to improve access, clinical care, and long-term outcomes of individuals with CF who undergo lung transplant. Cleveland Clinic draws patients from throughout the US and evaluates high-risk CF patients such as those with multidrug-resistant infections or liver dysfunction requiring liver transplantation, as well as urgent evaluation for individuals requiring mechanical ventilation or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Consistent with the trend in the U.S., CF related transplants at Cleveland Clinic in 2020-22 were down significantly secondary to the impact of Trikafta. Of all lung transplants performed in adults with cystic fibrosis in the US between 2000 and 2022, 5% were done at the Cleveland Clinic. Of all lung transplants performed in adults with cystic fibrosis in the state of Ohio between 2000 and 2022, 62% were performed at the Cleveland Clinic. ¹
