Carotid Stenting and Endarterectomy: Volume and Complications

Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to innovation includes the use of the most advanced treatment options for patients. Carotid stenting and endarterectomy are two such options for patients with cerebrovascular disease. Cleveland Clinic is included in the Vascular Quality Initiative®, a nationwide prospective database used to collect and analyze outcomes of surgical and minimally invasive vascular procedures. Participation in the initiative allows collaboration within Cleveland Clinic and with other institutions to enhance cerebrovascular treatment outcomes and maintain quality reporting.

Cleveland Clinic physicians performed 435 carotid stenting procedures and 1429 carotid endarterectomy procedures from 2018 through 2022 to treat patients with cerebrovascular disease. Outcomes were excellent, with low rates of complications. The overwhelming majority of carotid stent patients experienced stroke symptoms prior to intervention. Outcomes meet benchmarks for Joint Commission Stroke Center Accreditation.
Carotid Stenting and Endarterectomy: In-Hospital Complication Rate
2022
In-hospital mortality rates were low for patients who had carotid stenting (1.2%) and carotid endarterectomy (0%) at Cleveland Clinic in 2022. Stroke rates for 2022 were 1.2% for carotid stenting and 0.82% for carotid endarterectomy.
