Fairview Hospital Completes $83 Million Expansion of Emergency Department Intensive Care Unit

Ribbon Cutting on June 6, Community Open House on June 8

June 6, 2013

Cleveland Clinic’s Fairview Hospital is celebrating the completion of its new two-story, $83 million emergency department and intensive care unit this month. The new emergency department is set to officially open on June 13, and the new intensive care unit will open on June 20.

The 155,000-square-foot addition was built in front of the existing hospital to offer improved access to emergency and critical care services.

The expansion includes a 55-bed emergency department, including a separate 16-room pediatric emergency department, two Level II trauma rooms, and an expanded intensive care unit with 38 private patient rooms.

“We are very excited to open the new emergency department and intensive care unit at Fairview Hospital,” said Janice Murphy, BSN, MSN, and President of Fairview Hospital. “This expansion will help us build on the care we already provide to the community and enhance their access to care with faster service in a new, state-of-the-art facility.”

The expansion is part of Cleveland Clinic’s continued commitment to meet the healthcare needs of its communities. Fairview Hospital broke ground for the expansion in March 2011 with an original project budget of $76 million. Earlier this year, Cleveland Clinic officials decided to increase the number of intensive care unit beds and invest additional funds upfront instead of expanding later. Fairview Hospital has the only Level II Trauma Center on Cleveland’s west side, and the only pediatric emergency department, which is part of Cleveland Clinic Children’s.

Features of Fairview Hospital’s new emergency department include:

  • 55 beds located on one floor, with separate waiting rooms for adult and pediatric patients
  • A spacious new lobby and concourse that will easily connect to the rest of the hospital
  • Improved traffic flow around the hospital entrances, with two separate entrances for walk-in patients and ambulances
  • Additional X-ray and CT equipment located within the emergency department to expedite patient care

Features of Fairview Hospital’s new intensive care unit include:

  • 38 private rooms, with large rooms full of natural light
  • A new lift system installed in each room to increase patient mobility
  • A special lighting system designed to mimic day and night cycles to promote healing

As a result of the expansion, Cleveland Clinic worked with Turner Construction, the construction manager of the project. Over 1,100 construction employees worked on the project to date with nearly 276,000 man hours. The Design Group, based in Columbus, and Perspectus, a local firm in Shaker Heights, designed the expansion project.

Fairview Hospital is hosting a community open house on Saturday, June 8, from 1 – 4 p.m. in front of the hospital, which is located at 18101 Lorain Avenue. The community is invited to tour the new facility during that time.
