Why is this drug prescribed?
Mycophenolate mofetil prevents the production of special chemicals in your immune system needed for the T and B white blood cells to grow and increase in number. It is used to prevent rejection and improve survival of the transplanted organ.
When should it be taken?
- Mycophenolate mofetil is usually taken twice a day, on an empty stomach.
- Take your mycophenolate mofetil at the same time each day.
- Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
How should it be used?
- Mycophenolate mofetil comes in gelatin capsules or tablets. Your transplant coordinator or cardiologist will tell you how much to take at each dose.
- Mycophenolate mofetil should not be opened or crushed. If the contents of the capsules come in contact with skin, wash with soap and water.
- If eye contact occurs, rinse eyes with plain water.
What special instructions should I follow while using this drug?
- Keep all appointments with your doctor.
- Your doctor will tell you how often you will need to visit the lab for blood work. Most often this occurs once a week during the first month, twice a month for the second and third month, then monthly for the first year.
What should I do if I forget to take a dose?
If you remember within 6 hours of the forgotten dose, take it as soon as you remember. If not, take the next dose early and then resume normal dose schedule. Do not double the next dose. It is best not to forget to take medications!
What side effects can this drug cause? What can I do about them?
- nausea and diarrhea
If the effects persist or are severe, contact your doctor.
- increased risk for infections
Mycophenolate mofetil increases the risk for infections (especially herpes simplex, herpes zoster, urinary tract infections and upper respiratory infections). If you develop signs of an infection, contact your doctor.
- increased risk for malignancies
Patients receiving immunosuppressant medications are at increased risk for lymphomas, especially skin cancer. Special precautions should be taken.
- gastrointestinal bleeding
Tell your doctor if you have any history of stomach or intestinal problems (such as ulcers). Call your doctor if you notice any black or tarry stools or if you have abdominal pain.
What other precautions should I follow while using this drug?
- Talk to your doctor before taking any new medications (prescription and non-prescription). Many of these drugs will interfere with the metabolism of mycophenolate mofetil.
- If you are pregnant, think that you may be pregnant, or wish to become pregnant, discuss this matter with your doctor. Contraception must be used before beginning mycophenolate mofetil, during therapy and for 6 weeks after mycophenolate mofetil has been stopped.
- Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.
How do I store this drug?
Store mycophenolate mofetil in its original container, away from light or heat.
