Biographical Sketch

Sandra Halliburton, PhD, was appointed to Cleveland Clinic in 1999 as a staff scientist in the Section of Cardiovascular Imaging within the Division of Radiology at Cleveland Clinic. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland Clinic as well as an academic appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland State University. Dr. Halliburton specializes in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the heart.

Dr. Halliburton completed her undergraduate work in physics at Hendrix College in Arkansas, where she received multiple scholarships and academic honors, graduating summa cum laude. She received her Masters of Science degree in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where she went on to receive her PhD in biomedical engineering. At Vanderbilt, she was awarded a fellowship by the National Science Foundation and a training grant by the National Institutes of Health. She was also inducted into the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

As a cardiac imaging scientist, Dr. Halliburton has developed and implemented novel and state-of-the-art CT and MR imaging and post-processing techniques for clinical cardiac studies. Her primary areas of CT research include patient radiation safety, atherosclerotic plaque characterization, contrast agent enhancement, and coronary artery calcium scoring. Her primary areas of MRI research include flow dynamics and atherosclerotic plaque characterization. Dr. Halliburton has been invited to lecture on her research work and clinical experiences at medical symposia and conferences nationally and internationally. She has authored or co-authored numerous articles and abstracts in leading publications including Radiology, Circulation, the Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography, the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and the Annals of Biomedical Engineering, among others.

Dr. Halliburton is a member of the Radiological Society of North America, the American Heart Association, the Society for Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, the North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging, and the American Roentgen Ray Society and has been selected to serve on many special committees within these societies.  In addition, she serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and as a reviewer for numerous other scientific journals. Dr. Halliburton is also a founding member of the International Consortium on Standardization of Cardiac CT and the Certification Board of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.
