Dermot Phelan, MD, PhD, is a is a cardiologist in the section of Cardiovascular Imaging in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, and Medical Director of the Sports Cardiology Center in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He is an assistant professor at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. In addition, Dr. Phelan coordinates and teaches an echocardiography lecture series at Cleveland Clinic and is a course Co-Director for the Cleveland Clinic echocardiography national meeting.
Dr. Phelan is heavily involved in the cardiac health of athletes. He is Director of the Sports Cardiology Center and heads the NFL Player Care Foundation Healthy Body and Mind screening program, a national health screening program for retired NFL players, and serves as a consultant at the NFL scouting combine.

Education and Training: Dr. Phelan earned his undergraduate degree and doctorate degrees from University College Dublin, Ireland. After completing his medical degree, he divided a two-year residency in medicine between Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia, and Saint Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. Following a six-month fellowship in cardiology at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin, he returned to University College Dublin as a PhD Clinical Scientist Fellow. Following this two-year experience he served a fellowship in cardiology, training in three hospitals in Dublin and Galway, Ireland. He completed his training with an advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Phelan joined the Cleveland Clinic staff in 2013.
Publications and Speaking: Dr. Phelan has authored or coauthored two dozen articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and has written multiple chapters in a medical text books and study guides. He has delivered nearly three dozen research abstract presentations at national medical meetings and conferences.
