Biographical Sketch
Bassam Estfan, MD, was born in the United Kingdom and raised in Damascus, Syria. He joined Cleveland Clinic in August, 2008, as a clinical associate in the Department of Solid Tumor Oncology, Section of Palliative Medicine.
After graduating from Damascus University's Faculty of Medicine he completed his post- graduate training in internal medicine at Monmouth Medical Center, followed by a two-year fellowship in palliative medicine at Cleveland Clinic. He is board-certified in both internal medicine and hospice and palliative medicine.
Dr. Estfan has practiced palliative medicine in Syria for two years prior to rejoining the Cleveland Clinic. His interest in palliative medicine started during his residency with active participation in learning about and caring for those with advanced illnesses. He received the Award for Humanism in Medicine at the end of his training.
During his fellowship Dr. Estfan was actively involved in research projects and publications, especially in regards to cancer-related cough and opioid-related respiratory depression. He presented at national conferences and received a Fellow of the Year award from Cleveland Clinic.
Areas of interest include cancer pain management, symptom control, hospice care, and a keen interest in oncology--especially cancer complications and cancer supportive care.
Dr. Estfan is married, and he spends his leisure time reading and enjoying cultural and social activities.
