Biographical Sketch

Stephen Fening, PhD, is Research Director for the Sports Health Center and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Dr. Fening holds joint appointments in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery/Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute (ORI) and the Department of Biomedical Engineering/Lerner Research Institute (LRI). His area of specialty is translational orthopaedic biomechanics. His research focuses on cartilage injury modeling and biomechanics of the knee and shoulder.

Upon completing a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 2001, Dr. Fening developed an interest in transferring traditional mechanical engineering principles to the medical realm. This led him to pursue a Master's degree, focusing on reconstructing MR and CT images of the human knee into solid models. Dr. Fening continued his research at Ohio University and graduated with an interdisciplinary PhD in biomedical engineering in 2005. His research focused on using finite element analysis to evaluate the effects of meniscal sizing on contact stresses in the knee.

Dr. Fening started at Cleveland Clinic as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2005. His joint appointment to the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopaedic Surgery gives him the unique opportunity to work on research that is readily transferable to patient care.
