Biographical Sketch

Martin LeBoutillier III, MD, is a member of the Cleveland Clinic consultant staff and a cardiac surgeon at Chester County Hospital in West Chester, Pa. -- a Cleveland Clinic Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Affiliate Program. He is board-certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. LeBoutillier specializes in off-pump cardiac bypass surgery as well as minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve surgery. He has a strong interest in treating atrial fibrillation through the use of minimally invasive surgery. 
 
Born and raised in New York, Dr. LeBoutillier received his medical degree from New York City’s Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons following a bachelor’s degree in economics from Boston University. He took his internship and residency in general surgery at New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Medical Center in New York, where he became Chief Resident. Those institutions also awarded him a two-year research fellowship in cardiovascular surgery and vascular molecular biology, after which he completed his fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.  

Dr. LeBoutillier has held academic appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the College of Medicine of Pennsylvania State University and as Clinical Instructor in Surgery at New York University School of Medicine.

His most recent research focused on epicardial pulmonary vein isolation. This pilot study investigated the use of prophylactic radiofrequency ablation in preventing postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting and/or aortic valve replacement. He has also been involved in a Phase III clinical trial of the effects of pexelizumab on all causes of mortality and myocardial infarction in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass with cardiopulmonary bypass.

He is primary author of chapters in medical textbooks on ischemic heart disease and on combined valvular and ischemic heart disease, and he has published articles on his specialty interests in leading peer-reviewed journals including Circulation, Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. LeBoutillier is an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Medical Association.
