Biographical Sketch

Ingrid Tuxhorn MBChB, MD, is a  senior Pediatric Epileptologist on staff  at the Epilepsy Center  in the Neurological Institute of  the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr Tuxhorn headed a large and internationally recognized pediatric epilepsy unit at the Bethel Epilepsy Center in Germany before her staff appointment at the clinic in February 2007.

After completing medical school in Cape Town South Africa, she acquired extensive postgraduate training in pediatrics, neurology and pediatric neurology, epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology in leading academic centers in the USA  and Europe. Her mentors have included Prof Peter Wolf currently the president of the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) and Prof Doose who first described the Doose Syndrome " a specific form of myoclonic epilepsy in childhood."  She in turn has mentored a number of young colleagues who have achieved prominence in the field of epilepsy.

While practicing in Europe she actively participated as an expert and leader within a number of  professional societies. She was the international delegate of the German chapter to the ILAE   and  she worked on the task force for pediatric epilepsy surgery standards of the ILAE. The  physician members  voted  her  into the executive board of the German speaking child neurology societies (Austria, Switzerland and Germany) which publishes its own scientific journal (Neuropediatics) and awards the prestigious annual Peter Emil Becker prize.

Dr Tuxhorn  has lectured widely on various topics relating to pediatric epilepsy at the invitation of her peers in numerous countries including Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Slovenia and Poland.

She has presented original scientific work relating to clinical seizure manifestations, EEG features of seizures and surgical treatment issues at the annual meeting of the American Epilepsy Society and European and International Epilepsy Congresses. Dr Tuxhorn has collaborated with cutting edge basic science groups studying mechanisms of epileptogenesis in resected brain tissue  at the Universities of Muenster, Hannover and Duesseldorf.  She was the recipient of a large grant from the German ministry of health to contribute towards a " model of care for chronic diseases in childhood". This research on longterm outcome of epilepsy surgery in children has resulted in the publication of a monograph and a number of scientific papers.

Dr Tuxhorn is a regular reviewer for a number of scientific journals which includes Epilepsia, Seizure and Epileptic disorders. She has published extensively  in leading scientific journals and written book chapters for international series eg. yearbook of neurology. In addition she edited  a multiauthor comprehensive  book  dedicated to pediatric epilepsy surgery (Pediatric Epilepsy Syndromes and their Surgical Treatment) in 1997.

Dr Tuxhorn is committed to providing comprehensive care to children with epilepsy.

Her particular areas of interest and expertise include managing a first seizure, diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy syndromes across various age groups from infants to adolescents, optimizing epilepsy management in Sturge Weber Syndrome, epilepsy surgery and cognitive outcome. She believes every child with epilepsy is entitled to a cure. She is dedicated to strive for this goal with families, the multiprofessional team at the Cleveland Clinic  and professional organizations at the national level.
