Biographical Sketch

Jianguo Cheng, MD, PhD, is an Anesthesiologist and Pain Therapy Specialist at the Anesthesiology Institute. He is also a Principal Investigator of the Department of Neurosciences at the Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic. He is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties. He has added Subspecialty Certification in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Cheng has received research grants of over $2 million from the National Institutes of Health and state funding agencies. Treatment interests include back pain, neck pain, chest wall pain, abdominal pain, pelvic pain, joint pain, myofascial pain, discogenic pain, headaches, neuropathic pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, vertebral compression fracture, regional anesthesia, spinal cord stimulation, occipital nerve stimulation, intrathecal pump therapy, intradiscal electrothermal annuloplasty, percutaneous intradiscal nucleoplasty, percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.

Innovations & Patents
Dr. Cheng is a recipient of the Cleveland Clinic 2007 Inventor Award for his investigation of the therapeutic application of gap junction inhibitors in the management of pain. He is also the inventor of a wheelchair powered by electrical stimulation of paralyzed leg muscles, designed for patients with spinal cord injury and the elderly. This novel technology is undergoing clinical trial at multiple centers.
