Biographical Sketch

Mercedes K.C. Dullum, MD, is a Staff Cardiac Surgeon in the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida. She is also Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at George Washington University Medical Center and Georgetown University Hospital, both in Washington, D.C. She is board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Dullum has worked extensively in the management of heart disease in women. Her specialty interests also include minimally invasive surgery, beating heart cardiac bypass grafting, atrial fibrillation and the surgical management of heart failure.

Following undergraduate work at Georgia Institute of Technology where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in applied biology and was selected for the Beta Beta Beta Honor Society, Dr. Dullum received her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, where she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Dullum completed her surgical internship and residency at the University of Mississippi and her residency in thoracic surgery at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. During this time, she was named one of the Outstanding Young Women of America by the American Heart Association.

Prior to her appointment to Cleveland Clinic in 2004, Dr. Dullum was a Cardiac Surgeon in private practice and a Senior Attending Surgeon at Washington Hospital Center. Washingtonian magazine named her “Top Cardiac Surgeon” in Washington, D.C., for several years.

She serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Heart Surgery Forum, and in 2003 was elected President of Women in Thoracic Surgery through 2005. She also serves on the Medical Advisory Board for www.HeartHealthyWomen.com, for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in women supported by the Department of Health and Human Services. She is a member of the Maryland Health Care Commission Advisory Committee on Outcome Assessment on Cardiovascular Care and is on the Board of Directors for Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. Dullum has been an invited lecturer at national and international symposia and conferences on her specialty interests. She has authored or co-authored articles and abstracts in leading scientific and medical journals including Stroke, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Dullum is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Women in Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Cardiology, American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Physician Executives, Association of Women Surgeons, the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, the Heart Failure Society of America, the American Medical Association, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society and the Caribbean Cardiac Society.
