Biographical Sketch
Emilio D. Poggio, MD, FASN, is an Associate Staff in the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension of the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He also has joint appointments in the Transplant Center, Cleveland Clinic, and the Department of Immunology at Lerner Research Institute.
Dr. Poggio is board-certified in internal medicine and in nephrology and hypertension. His clinical practice focuses on the care of subjects with kidney disease, specifically kidney and pancreas transplant candidates and recipients, and those with kidney disease following nonrenal organ transplantation.
Dr. Poggio has several major areas of clinical and translational research and has published and lectured about these topics:
- Assessment of kidney function (glomerular filtration rate) in health and in disease
- Living donor kidney factors that relate to outcomes for transplant recipients and the development of tools to risk-stratify patients based on pretransplantation data
- Development of novel cellular immune-monitoring techniques in the setting of organ transplantation.
Dr. Poggio holds an NIH grant through the NIAID until 2012 to study immune-monitoring tools in kidney transplant candidates and how these novel noninvasive approaches can help to predict outcomes and individualize patient care.
