Biographical Sketch
Paul Schoenhagen, MD, is a Physician in the Departments of Diagnostic Radiology and Cardiovascular Medicine. He is board-certified in internal medicine. His clinical interest is focused on cardiovascular imaging with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. He is also involved in work related to the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Schoenhagen has a special interest in imaging of coronary atherosclerosis and imaging of the aorta and aortic root.
A native of Koblenz, Germany, Dr. Schoenhagen graduated with a degree in mineralogy from the Ruhr-Universitaet, Bochum, Germany. He received his medical degree from the Karls-Universitaet, Tuebingen, and doctoral degree from the the Philips-Universitaet, Marburg, also in Germany. He received his initial clinical training in internal medicine and radiology in Stuttgart, Germany. This was followed by a residency in internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic, and subsequent fellowships in cardiology and in cardiovascular tomography, also at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Schoenhagen was appointed to Cleveland Clinic in 2003.
Dr. Schoenhagen has been honored for his clinical research, which has focused on the implications of plaque vulnerability, intravascular ultrasound research and the application of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for atherosclerosis research.
He has published numerous original and review articles in leading peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the European Heart Journal, and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. Dr. Schoenhagen is first author of a textbook of Coronary Intravascular Ultrasound Imaging, and a textbook of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. He has contributed to several chapters in other medical textbooks related to his specialty interests. He has been invited to present his clinical experience and research at medical symposia and conferences in Japan, Europe, and nationally.
Dr. Schoenhagen is a Fellow of the Council on Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology of the American Heart Association. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the European Society of Cardiology and the Radiologic Society of North America. He is an affiliate member of the American College of Cardiology.
