Biographical Sketch
Philip Joseph Hashkes, MD, MSc, was born in New York and moved to Israel. In 2003, he was recruited to Cleveland Clinic as the Head of the Section of Pediatric Rheumatology. He is also an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.
He has practiced pediatric rheumatology since 1994 and his major clinical interests include the new and expanding field of autoinflammatory (“periodic fever”) diseases, pediatric vasculitis and the drug therapy of juvenile arthritis, especially the new “biologic” medications.
He has been named in America’s “Best Doctors” list and is the pediatric consultant for the Vasculitis Foundation. A major part of his work is devoted to the research of new treatment for juvenile arthritis and autoinflammatory diseases and to epidemiologic studies of the long-term outcome of these diseases.
He has received research grants from the Arthritis Foundation and the Food and Drug Administration. He has recently started working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) autoinflammatory research clinic as part of Cleveland Clinic-NIH partnership. He is a member in several national and international organizations devoted to the research of pediatric rheumatology and is a member of the Medical and Scientific Committee of the local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.
He has published more than 55 scientific papers and book chapters in pediatric rheumatology and is a frequent lecturer in local and national medical meetings. His paper describing evidence-based guidelines for the medical treatment of juvenile arthritis is considered of the most important papers on this topic in recent years. He is currently the pediatric rheumatology section editor of the Current Opinion in Rheumatology journal.
