Biographical Sketch
Robert Roman Lorenz, MD, FACS, is Section Head of Head and Neck Surgery in the Head and Neck Institute. He is board-certified in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery.
Dr. Lorenz's education includes a Bachelor of Science from Yale University and a Medical Doctorate with Honors from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His training in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery was completed at the Cleveland Clinic, including an additional year of research. His fellowship was performed at Vanderbilt University in head and neck tumor and skull-base surgery.
Dr. Lorenz returned to the Cleveland Clinic and became the Head of the Section of Head and Neck Surgery after one year of practice. His interests include airway reconstruction, head and neck tumors including paragangliomas and carotid body tumors and Zenker’s diverticulum. He is an innovator in vocal cord paralysis, laryngeal and tracheal stenosis, as well as laryngeal and tracheal transplantation.
Dr. Lorenz manages laryngeal complications of Wegener's granulomatosis in over 100 patients and specializes in the treatment of subglottic stenosis due to Wegener’s disease. He serves as consultant to the Vasculitis Foundation. His clinical interests include the removal of tracheotomy tubes in patients with stenosis of the airway, and he holds a U.S. patent on a tracheotomy tube adapter.
Dr. Lorenz has co-authored over 40 scientific articles, 10 book chapters and delivered over 90 invited national and international lectures or papers. Dr. Lorenz is an educator, teaching residents and fellows in head and neck surgery, and serves on the editorial board or as a reviewer for 10 different scientific journals in his field. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Touch Briefings, a scientific publisher based in London, England. In addition, he maintains one of the highest patient satisfaction scores in the Head and Neck Institute.
