David O. Taylor, MD, is a board-certified Cardiologist in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic and Director of its Heart Failure Special Care Unit. He is also Director of the Heart Failure and Transplantation Fellowship Program. Dr. Taylor joined Cleveland Clinic in 2001, serving as attending physician for heart failure and cardiac transplant patients.
Dr. Taylor is certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is licensed by the National Board of Medical Examiners, and in addition to Ohio, is licensed to practice medicine in Utah, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and Illinois.
Hailing from New Mexico, Dr. Taylor earned his medical degree at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. He completed his undergraduate studies at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He was a resident in cardiology and internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia, where he subsequently completed fellowships in cardiology, heart failure and cardiac transplantation.
Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Taylor served 10 years at the University of Utah where he was Medical Director of the Cardiac Transplant Program. He was a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Utah Medical Center, receiving five Outstanding Teaching Awards during his tenure there. Currently, Dr. Taylor has an academic appointment as Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Taylor served on the Board of Directors of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation from 2000 to 2003. Currently, he is Associate Director for Heart
Transplantation for the International Society Transplantation Registry.
Dr. Taylor is Associate Editor of the prestigious American Journal of Transplantation. He serves on the editorial board of that journal as well as the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is a reviewer for several professional journals, including American Heart Journal, Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Circulation. He serves as an abstract grader at national and international scientific meetings and has chaired numerous scientific symposia and plenary sessions.
Dr. Taylor is an invited lecturer at symposia and conferences worldwide. In 1996, he was Co-Chair of the Medical Affairs Committee for the United States Transplant Olympic Games.
He has participated in various research studies as principal investigator or co-investigator. He currently is a principal investigator in a multicenter study of the efficacy, safety and tolerability of treatments for patients with acute heart failure.
Dr. Taylor is widely published in leading peer-reviewed medical journals on topics in his specialty interests. He is an author of chapters in medical textbooks on cardiovascular related issues.
During his career, Dr. Taylor has received a variety of honors and awards. In 2001, he received a commendation of Exceptionally Meritorious Service from the Department of Veterans Affairs. In 2006, he was honored by the Medical College of Virginia as Distinguished Cardiology Alumnus.
Dr. Taylor resides with his family in the greater Cleveland area. His office is located at the main campus of Cleveland Clinic
