Biographical Sketch
Nina Desai, PhD, HCLD, earned her doctorate in microbiology/cell biology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Piscataway. She served as a Research Fellow at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in infertility at the Ohio State University, Columbus, where she also directed the in vitro fertilization laboratory.

Dr. Desai subsequently joined Case Western Reserve University as Director of the IVF/Andrology Laboratories and Clinical Research at University Hospitals. Dr. Desai was recruited to join Cleveland Clinic in 2000 and to set up a brand new IVF laboratory at the clinic's Beachwood site.

Throughout her career, she has been actively involved in both clinical and basic research in embryology. Her research activities are geared towards developing innovative culture and cryopreservation methodologies to improve clinical pregnancy outcomes. Current research projects are focused on growth factors and embryonic development, blastocyst differentiation, embryonic markers to predict implantation, egg freezing, ovarian tissue cryopreservation and immature follicle maturation.
Education & Fellowships

Other Education:(Doctorate) College of Medicine of New Jersey, Newark, NJ
Other Education:(Undergraduate) Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
Additional Training
  • Board-certified as High Complexity Laboratory Director (HCLD)
Specialty Interests
Blastocyst culture, in vitro fertilization, preimplantation genetic diagnosis and immature oocyte maturation, reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
Innovations & Patents
  • Pioneered the use of a novel endometrial cell line to promote human embryo development during in vitro fertilization. This technique benefits patients who have repeated implantation failures or poor embryo quality, allowing them to successfully achieve a pregnancy.
  • Established a preimplantation genetic diagnosis program for screening of IVF embryos for genetic diseases or chromosomal abnormalities. First clinic to offer such testing in northern Ohio.
  • Introduced an innovative embryo freezing methodology that has resulted in a significant increase in clinical pregnancy outcomes with frozen embryos.
  • Invented a novel methodology for single sperm cryopreservation in cases of severe male infertility. Small numbers of sperm can be surgically retrieved from the testis and stored for a future treatment cycle.
