Biographical Sketch
Timur Sarac, MD, is a Staff Vascular Surgeon in Cleveland Clinic's Department of Vascular Surgery. He is board-certified in vascular and general surgery. Dr. Sarac’s specialty interests are minimally invasive vascular surgery, endovascular stents, aortic aneurysm stents/repair, carotid artery stent/surgery, thoraco-abdominal aortic repair/reconstruction, thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, re-operative surgery and peripheral artery/vein repair/bypass surgery.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Dr. Sarac did his undergraduate work at the University of Rochester and Canisius College in Buffalo, from which he graduated cum laude with degrees in biology and history. He received his medical degree, graduating summa cum laude, from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He continued there to pursue additional training in surgical oncology and tumor immunology, receiving the Buffalo Surgical Society Award for Highest Academic Achievements. Dr. Sarac took his surgical residency at the University of Rochester, becoming Chief Resident in Surgery. He then spent two years there as a Research Fellow. He received a fellowship in vascular surgery from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville and a fellowship in endovascular surgery from the Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Dr. Sarac holds an academic appointment as Associate Professor at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic in 1999, Dr. Sarac was a Vascular Surgeon at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
In 2003, Dr. Sarac served with the United States Army in Operation Iraqi Freedom, receiving the Enduring Freedom Achievement Medal.
Dr. Sarac has conducted many research studies on his clinical interests in preventing and treating vascular and coronary disease. Much or his research is grant supported. He is Principal Investigator in the Pivotal Trial. He is also a researcher in the VALOR trial and the CREST Carotid Stent Trial, among others. He has received ten patents for his development of methods and apparatuses for repair of aneurysms and blockages and for his development of prosthetic valves. He also is the inventor of a tissue lined stent.
Dr. Sarac has presented his research and clinical experience at national medical meetings and symposia, including before the American College of Surgeons and the International Society for Endovascular Therapy, among others.
He serves as editorial reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the Journal of Endovascular Therapy, Vascular Surgeon and Vascular Medicine. He has authored or co-authored eight chapters in medical textbooks on his specialty interests and nearly 45 articles in leading peer-reviewed medical journals.
Dr. Sarac is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association for Vascular Surgery, the Society for Vascular Surgery, the International Society for Vascular Surgery, the Midwestern Vascular Society and the Cleveland Vascular Society.
