Biographical Sketch

Daniel Clair, MD, is Chairman of the Department of Vascular Surgery and a Vascular Surgeon practicing at Cleveland Clinic's main campus. Dr. Clair is board-certified in general and vascular surgery. He specializes in carotid artery surgery, thoraco-abdominal aortic repair/reconstruction, thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, peripheral artery/vein repair/bypass surgery, aortic aneurysm stent repair and endovascular stent repair.

Dr. Clair received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Va., where he was inducted into the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. He took his internship and residency in surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, becoming Chief Resident in Surgery and receiving the F.D. Moore Resident Teaching Award. Dr. Clair completed his training with clinical and research fellowships, among them a fellowship in clinical oncology from the American Cancer Society; a fellowship in vascular surgery from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he became an associate surgeon; and research fellowship as Research Scientist at VazoRx, Inc., in Woburn, Mass.

For four years, Dr. Clair was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., completing his military service stationed at Andrews AFB, Md., as Chief of the Vascular Surgery Section. He has had a number of academic appointments including Clinical Fellow in Surgery at Harvard Medical School, where he was also Instructor in Surgery. He also taught at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons as Assistant Professor of Surgery, where he served as the Chief of the Vascular Surgery Service, and at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, where he was Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery. Dr. Clair joined Cleveland Clinic in 2004. He was named Chairman/Program Director of the Department of Vascular Surgery in 2006.

Dr. Clair’s research interests have focused on clinical trials of minimally invasive vascular therapies. He has played a significant role in industry-sponsored clinical trials, most recently as the National Principal Investigator for the EMPIRE Trial in which researchers study a flow reversal system for carotid stenting. He is a Principal Investigator for the MASCOT claudication trial and the Rheos Feasibility Study assessing a mechanical device designed to treat hypertension. He has been invited to present his research findings and clinical experience at more than 90 international and national medical conferences and symposia.

On the Editorial Board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Editorial Advisory Board of Vascular Disease Management, Dr. Clair also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the Journal of Endovascular Therapy and the Annals of Vascular Surgery. He has authored or co-authored more than 60 articles and book chapters on his clinical experience and research.

Dr. Clair was named Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Surgery. He is a member of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the International Society for Vascular Surgery, the American Association for Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society, the Peripheral Vascular Surgical Society, the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the International Society for Endovascular Surgery, the Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons and the Medical Society of Virginia.
