Biographical Sketch
Karen A. Broer, PhD, is a staff psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology of the Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute, where she has worked for more than10 years. 

She is a communication skills preceptor in the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. As part of the Allied Health Education Council, she is the Director for the Counseling program providing master-level counseling students from local universities with clinical and educational internship experiences at Cleveland Clinic.  For the past five years, she has been an adjunct associate professor at John Carroll University, teaching graduate students in the Masters Counseling Program.

Prior to pursuing training as a psychologist and counselor, Dr. Broer had an eclectic career and academic history. Initially a teacher by training, she taught in both elementary and secondary schools. Her professional writing experiences include public relations and technical writing for the government. She has also worked in higher education and cultural arts management.

Her interests include teaching, writing and counseling. She is especially interested in the interface of counseling and spirituality. Her research focuses on the health effects of spiritual meditation with acute leukemia patients.
