Biographical Sketch

Takahiro Shiota, MD, is a Staff Cardiologist, and the Director of 3D Echocardiography in the Section of Cardiovascular Imaging, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, at Cleveland Clinic Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. Shiota is also Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.

His specialty interests include valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, heart murmurs and echocardiography. Dr. Shiota is certified by the National Board of Echocardiography, holding medical licenses in the United States and in Japan.

Dr. Shiota is a graduate of the University of Tokyo where he received a Bachelor of Science, his medical degree and a PhD in cardiology. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Tokyo Hospital, and underwent a fellowship in cardiology. He also has completed an advanced fellowship in cardiac imaging in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Shiota is Editor-in-Chief of Cardiac Ultrasound Today. An expert in echocardiography, he promotes the improvement of diagnostic accuracy and the best management practices of patients with cardiac diseases. Dr. Shiota collaborates closely with cardiac surgeons at Cleveland Clinic to pursue cutting-edge surgical and medical managements, especially for patients with heart valve problems.

Dr. Shiota serves as a reviewer of medical journals that focus on his specialty interests, including Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He has served as an abstract grader for the national conference of the American College of Cardiology and other cardiology conferences. Dr. Shiota has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles and over 300 abstracts in leading professional journals. He has authored many chapters in medical textbooks on topics such as valvular heart disease and surgical treatment for heart failure patients, among others.

Dr. Shiota is a regularly invited lecturer at national and international symposia and conferences, and chairs sessions on topics related to the surgical application of echocardiography and recent advances in echocardiography. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography and the American Heart Association. Dr. Shiota is a member of the Council on Clinical Cardiology for the American Heart Association. He has been named one of "America's Top Cardiologists."

Dr. Shiota has two daughters and enjoys playing golf and tennis. He loves reading, visiting museums and listening to classical music, especially at Cleveland Orchestra.
