Biographical Sketch
Shakuntala (Rita) Kothari, MD, is a Staff physician in the Department of Internal Medicine at Cleveland Clinic's main campus. Dr. Kothari came to the Cleveland Clinic in 1996 as a clinical associate in the Department of General Internal Medicine, where she remained, rising from assistant staff to associate staff to her current position.
Dr. Kothari's specialty interests include contraception and menopause.
Dr. Kothari completed her medical degree at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and then did an internal medicine residency at Cleveland Clinic. Board-certified by the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine, Dr. Kothari is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American Medical Women’s Association. She is also a Fellow in the American College of Physicians.
Active in community and women’s health issues, Dr. Kothari was a long-term volunteer at the Cleveland Clinic’s Free Health Clinic. She edited the women’s health section of a textbook, The Cleveland Clinic: Current Clinical Medicine. She currently edits the women’s health section of the online Disease Management Project at http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/.
Dr. Kothari has been published in a number of journals. Topics include updates on female contraception, preventative services in pregnancy, risk assessment of the menopausal patient and the physician’s role in prevention and medical management of unwanted pregnancies.
