Biographical Sketch
Dr. Joseph F. Sabik, III is the Chairman of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Surgical Director of the Cardio/Thoracic ICU, Director of the Cardiothoracic Residency Training Program and a staff surgeon in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and he is Diplomate, American Board of Surgery and National Board of Medical Examiners. His specialty interests include adult cardiac surgery, valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease, surgery of the thoracic aorta, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.
A native of Massachusetts, Dr. Sabik did his undergraduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Sabik completed his surgical internship and surgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he became Chief Resident in Surgery.
During his surgical training, Dr. Sabik received appointments from Harvard Medical School as both Clinical Fellow and Research Fellow in Surgery. He also was appointed as a Research Fellow in Cardiovascular Surgery at Children’s Hospital in Boston. After completing his general surgery training, Dr. Sabik became a resident in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Cleveland Clinic, and during his final year of training was the Chief Resident in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. In 1996, he was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery as a staff physician.
Dr. Sabik continues to be involved in numerous research studies including a clinical study to evaluate the effectiveness of the Blake Drainage System following cardiac surgery and a study on temperature management in surgery and critical care. He is the principal investigator in a study on the humanitarian use of BioGlue Surgical Adhesive for aortic dissections. He is widely published in scientific and professional journals on topics related to his research and clinical experience and his specialty interests including the journals Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Annals of Thoracic Surgery, among many others.
Dr. Sabik has been an invited lecturer to international and national conferences to present his research and clinical findings and to speak on his surgical practice.
In 2004, Dr. Sabik was inducted into the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Massachusetts General Hospital Alumni Society and the Ohio State Medical Association.
