Innovations & Patents

• At the institutional level we started and lead the Cardio-Oncology program at Cleveland Clinic Florida where we established an innovative mechanism with a Cardio Oncology Clinic at the Cancer Center to facilitate interaction and facilitate access to cardiovascular care for oncology patients. This setting improves workflow and encourages inter-specialty consultations and pathways for expedite care and improves patient care. We have grown our program, the only existing in south east Florida, and receive referrals and consultations from state and national centers.

  At the state level, we started and Chair the Cardio Oncology Committee at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Florida Chapter (3,000 Chapter members) and started a partnership with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Florida Chapter (FLASCO, 3,200 Chapter members). Our successful collaboration program published by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology Cardio-Oncology was a model subsequently adopted by other states. We are working towards starting a Cardio-Oncology state Registry, within the context of the Global Cardio-Oncology Registry that we also lead. We created educational materials for cardiology and oncology practitioners in Florida, available online at the state Chapters websites (ACC and ASCO)

  At the national level, we started a multistate collaborative advocacy network that has now grown into a state, national and international network with cardiologists and oncologists. We are members of the American College of Cardiology Leadership Council for the 2020-2023 term and co-Chair the Advocacy Work Group to improve access to care, improve awareness of cancer and cardiovascular disease in the medical community, and work with government agencies on regulatory issues related to access to expensive medications, and advocate in Congress for legislation for research and public education support.

  At the international level, we participate in the Education Committee of the International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS) the international leader in cardio-oncology. To further grow our collaborative model at the state and national level, we developed a large collaborative network that currently has 117 participating hospitals/sites from 23 countries, including many major academic US Centers from 22 states and participants from large academic and community centers from Latin America, Europe, Asia and Australia. We have completed the platform to launch the first Global International Cardio-Oncology Registry to address regional and national differences in delivery of care and outcomes and to evaluate disparities in cardio -oncology care and its impact on outcomes.
