Biographical Sketch
Declan Walsh, MSc, FACP, FRCP, became the first Director of the new Palliative Care Program at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center in 1987. In October 1991, the program was designated as a national and international demonstration project by the World Health Organization. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1988 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 1998.
In 1996, an endowed Chair of Palliative Medicine was created at Cleveland Clinic by the HRH Foundation with Dr. Walsh as the first incumbent. He became Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Home Care in 2000. He was appointed Division Chairman for Post Acute Medicine in 2003. He was elected to the Cleveland Clinic’s Board of Governors in 2004. Dr. Walsh is a founding member of both the European Association of Palliative Care and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
His research interests lie in the clinical syndromes common in advanced cancer, and in the clinical pharmacology of symptom control.
Dr. Walsh is associate editor of the journal Supportive Care in Cancer. He also serves on the editorial boards for The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Journal of Supportive Oncology, and Supportive Cancer Therapy. In 2008, he worked with Elsevier on a textbook for palliative medicine, of which he is the editor.
