Biographical Sketch

Norman Starr, MD, was Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, 1988 to 2007, and remains Vice Chairman of the Institute of Anesthesiology at Cleveland Clinic. He is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Starr specializes in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, surgery outcomes research, risk stratification and quality service.

Following undergraduate school at Wabash College in Indiana, Dr. Starr received his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his internship at Latter-Day Saints Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, and his residency at New York’s Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. His clinical training was followed by a research fellowship from Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

Upon completion of his research fellowship, Dr. Starr completed two years of active duty in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps as Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Charleston, S.C., with an academic appointment as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the Medical University of South Carolina. In 1974, he became Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, New York University Medical Center, with joint appointments as an Attending Anesthesiologist at both Bellevue Hospital Center and the Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital, New York, N.Y.

He joined the Cleveland Clinic Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Division of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, in 1979, became the Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship training, a position held for nine years. Successive appointments included Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia in 1988, and Vice Chairman of the Division (now Institute) of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine in 1999.

Dr. Starr’s clinical research has focused primarily on the effectiveness of therapeutic anesthetic treatments for cardiac patients. He was on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, 1995-2006, plus manuscript reviewer for the medical journals Anesthesia & Analgesia, Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesiology. He is widely published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, and he is the author or co-author of chapters in medical textbooks that are related to his specialty interests. Dr. Starr has been an invited lecturer to medical conferences and symposia worldwide on issues related to anesthesia, especially in cardiac surgery.

Dr. Starr is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the American Medical Association, the American Heart Association, the Association of Cardiac Anesthesiologists (by invitation), the Northeast Ohio Heart Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists, the Cleveland Academy of Medicine and the Cleveland Society of Anesthesiologists.
