Biographical Sketch
Patrick O’Hara, MD, is a Staff Physician in the Department of Vascular Surgery, located on the main campus of Cleveland Clinic. He was appointed in 1979. Dr. O'Hara is board-certified and re-certified in vascular and general surgery. He specializes in both open and endovascular surgery including carotid artery surgery, thoracoabdominal aortic repair/reconstruction, thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, peripheral artery/vein repair, bypass surgery, minimally invasive vascular surgery, thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm stent repair, endovascular stent repair, visceral arterial reconstruction, minimally invasive vascular surgery, and visceral arterial reconstruction.
Dr. O’Hara is an Ohio native, born in Youngstown. He entered the six-year program of Liberal Arts and Medicine at Boston University. He received his undergraduate degree from Boston University College of Liberal Arts, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He simultaneously received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, graduating cum laude, and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. O'Hara was also the recipient of the Pfizer Scholarship.
Dr. O'Hara completed his surgical internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was subsequently a Clinical and Research Fellow in Vascular Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School.
Dr. O’Hara completed his military obligation on active duty as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service, serving in the department of surgery at the U. S. Public Health Service Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.
Dr. O'Hara has held a number of visiting professorships including lectures to the University of Texas in San Antonio; the International College of Angiology in Athens, Greece; the Italian Society for the Study of Hemostasis and Thrombosis in Perugia, Italy; the Mediterranean Institute of Cardiology in Aux-en-Provence, France; the Chilean Society for Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery in Santiago, Chile; and, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Dr. O’Hara currently serves as Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.
He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. He is section editor for Patient and Family Vascular Health on the Society for Vascular Surgery website, VascularWeb. Since 1994, he has served as an invited reviewer for The Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, and since 2000, for the Annals of Surgery. He is also the Liaison Member of the Program Committee on the Vascular Surgery Advisory Council for the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. O'Hara has authored or co-authored more than 20 chapters in medical textbooks, nearly 90 articles in leading peer-reviewed journals and 20 abstracts focusing on his specialty interests. He has performed surgeries for educational video presentations including complex abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery for the American College of Surgeons. Dr. O’Hara has been invited to present his clinical experience to national medical conferences and symposia.
Dr. O'Hara's ongoing clinical research studies focus on best practices related to his specialty interests. He is Core Lab Principal Investigator for the Core Lab Cordis Aortic Endograft Trial and he is a co-investigator in the Carotid Revascularization Endarectomy vs. Stenting Trial (CREST), among others.
Dr. O'Hara is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery. He is a former president of the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society and the Cleveland Vascular Surgery Society. He holds membership in a number of other professional medical societies including the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, the American Heart Association, the Central Surgical Association and the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland/Northern Ohio Medical Association, among others.
Dr. O'Hara was listed in the Best Doctors in America in 2005.
