Fetnat Fouad-Tarazi, M.D.

Fetnat Mahmoud Fouad Tarazi, MD, is Head of the Cleveland Clinic’s Hemodynamic and Neuroregulation Lab in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Cardiology, EP Imaging Section. She holds joint appointments in the Department of Nuclear Medicine and the Department of Molecular Cardiology. Dr. Fouad, who specializes in syncope, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Fouad received her medical degree from the Cairo University Faculty of Medicine in Egypt. She completed her internship and residency (in cardiology) at the Kasr El Aini Hospital at Cairo University, where she became Senior Registrar. She was a Special Fellow at Cleveland Clinic in the Division of Research. She also received the International Traveling Fellowship from Cleveland Clinic and a Senior Fellowship from the American Heart Association.

She is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Central Society for Clinical Research, and the Council for High Blood Pressure Research. She is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology, the American Medical Women’s Association, Inc, the American Medical Association, the American Autonomic Society, the American Federation for Clinical Research and the Cardiac Muscle Society.

Dr. Fouad is a reviewer for numerous publications including the American Journal of Cardiology, the Annals of Internal Medicine, Circulation, and Cardiovascular Drugs, to name a few. She is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Noninvasive Cardiology and Hypertension. She grades abstracts for the American College of Cardiology, the North American Society for Pacing and Electrophysiology and the American Heart Association

She is currently involved in several research projects that focus on blood pressure regulation in the supine posture and during Upright posture [changes induced by effect of gravity and acceleration/deceleration]. Some of the studies in hypertensive patients focus on how the use of different medicines can, among other things, help lower patients' blood pressure and fight heart failure. Other studies in syncope focus on understanding the mechanisms of postural dizziness/light headedness and syncope, the predictors to precipitation of events, and the establishment of contemporary approaches to diagnose and treat this condition.

Dr. Fouad has authored or co-authored numerous articles and abstracts in leading medical journals including Hypertension, Anesthesiology, the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, the American Journal of Cardiology, Annals of Internal Medicine and Circulation.

• Pioneered evaluation of syncope by laboratory assessment of the circulation and autonomic nervous system. As a result, a nationwide interest developed, which was to the best advantage of these patients.

• Sabbatical in Dallas to learn MSNA technique for direct evaluation of sympathetic nervous system function for research application
• Innovation visit to NIH to promote use of cardiac imaging techniques and neuropharmacologic procedures for state of the art evaluation of autonomic nervous system function in humans
• Approved CLIA for blood volume measurements in our syncope lab for evaluation of various cardiovascular problems
• Training in nuclear cardiac first pass and MUGA procedures at Cleveland Clinic and via International Traveling Fellowship Award; also training in requirements related to radioisotope use and safety applications in humans
• Initiation of the Langendorff isolated heart technique at ccf for basic research in cardiac physiology

• Development of Non-Invasive Nuclear Hemodynamic Method: This method allows outpatient evaluation and also can be repeated at intervals for follow-up as needed to assess response to treatment and assessment of disease progression
• Expansion of autonomic reflex testing to include combination of vascular reactivity measures along with procedures based on bp and hr; this addition allows for more accurate diagnosis by characterization of the cause of bp change in response to an intervention
